Richard Rector’s Atta Boy John, with jockey Jonathan Ruhsam — leading Virginia point-to-point rider for the past three years— showed his heels to the other nine starters from wire to wire in the open hurdle race. Jim Magee on his Dorroco Kid made a hard drive down the stretch, closing the gap to only a length and a half at the finish. Third was Task Order, ridden by owner Bill Walsh, followed by owner-rider Mike Adams on Mr. Mountain.
Fifth race was the Mary D. Slaughter Memorial, the open timber event at two and a half miles, which had a surprise ending. Most of the race had been a contest among Question the Devil, Kiev’s Lass, Ask the Price and I Achieve, Then Bel" Esprit moved up to go head and head with Question the Devil over the last of 13 fences. Miss Cherry, who had been kept far off the pace by 19-yearold Mike Brown, moved up at the top of the stretch and came flying past the leaders to win by a good margin. It was the second
