We would like to comment on the editorial of Thursday, February 19th that said, “We still feel that if parents want their children to attend kindergarten and they're willing to pay for it then there are ample programs available.”
This ignores a lot of parents who can’t afford to pay for a private kindergarten even if they believe in it.
Secondly, there are very few pre-school programs available in Rappahannock County. For most parents interested in kindergarten, sending a child means getting involved in driving up to 50 miles round trip a day. Is this fair? If all the children whose parents sent them to the summer program went to private kindergarten they could not be accomodated due to lack of available schools. Do people of the County really believe that Rappahannock’s any different from other rural counties? More years ago then I would like to admit I lived in a rural area in upstate New York and went to public kindergarten for
