Lt. D. Craig Welling, USN, was recently awarded a Letter of Commendation from Vice Admiral Joe Williams, Jr., Commander Submarine Force U. S. Atlantic Fleet for superior performance of duties aboard the USS James Madison (SSBN 627) (Blue) from September 1974 to November 1974.
Lt. Welling served as Damage Control Assistant, Auxiliary Division Officer, and Quality Assurance Coordinator aboard the Madison during the ship’s first extended refit period in Holy Loch, Scotland, for which he was cited.
Lt Welling was commended for his “superior managerial ability and technical competence. . .exceptional performance (and) good judgement. . .reflecting) great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.’’
Lt. Welling and his unit aboard the USS James Madison also received the Meritorious Unit Commendation Award from the Secretary of the Navy. He was presented with both awards by the Commander of the Naval Nuclear
