cause he loves the land or open space. He moves out of the city for many reasons, but few because of a seeking for bucolic simplicity — else why do so many suburbanites immediately start clamoring for city schools, city type streets and gutters, city-sized policeforces, urban recreational programs?
SAVING farmland is not something that can be done in the midst of unlimited, uncontrolled “development.” The two simply do not go together. That doesn’t mean shutting the door to everyone, but it does mean setting up door checks to make sure the house isn’t spoiled by overcrowding.
Rappahannock is a rural county with a rural lifestyleone tempered sharply, it is true, by recent trends set by weekenders and retirees. But it has been our understanding’ that people have moved here recently because Rappahannock is rural, open, clean and beautiful. Surely they don’t want to see that scrapped now out of some notion that we, somehow, have an obligation to accept every developer who’d like to make a quick buck and then move on to some other unspoiled county to repeat the process.□
