“What we don’t need in Washington’,’ Senator Byrd says, “are more big spenders in the Senate’.’ He believes that the primary cause for inflation is the reckless spending of the federal government and resulting record deficits. “The huge and accumulated deficits;’ he says, “are mortgaging the future of our young people and forcing up interest rates.
“Inflation is a hidden and cruel tax which eats into every wage-earner’s paycheck and every housewife’s grocery dollar. It hits hardest those on fixed incomes and those in the lower and middle economic brackets.
“We will not get the cost of living under control until we get the cost of government under control’,’ Harry Byrd continues, “and the place to start is in the high levels of government;’ He voted against increasing his own salary by opposing automatic cost-of-living increases for the Congress.
