Knowing that adequate food production can only be achieved with a minimum of government control, Harry Byrd has voted to exclude small farms from oppressive OSHA regulations. He has also voted to strengthen beef markets, opposed an excessive tax increase on one of our leading farm products, and supported an increase in the federal estate tax exemption to encourage preservation of Virginia’s family farms. Harry Byrd supports the efforts of law officers to reduce crime, and he has voted for both the death penalty for violent federal crimes; and for mandatory sentences for “hard” narcotics pushers and for those convicted of federal crimes involving handguns. But he opposes additional federal gun controls, wide-scale domestic wiretapping and “no-knock” search and seizure laws as violations of your rights as a law-abiding citizen.
