could not envision “heavy housing on the site after the landfill was reclaimed, unless an area was set aside for future septic fields.
Suitable landfill sites can go as deep as 70 feet, but in Rappahannock County, Foreman said, they would be “lucky” to find a site with a soil depth of 15 to 16 feet. “If there is not a soil depth of over 12 feet we would have to look for another site,” Foreman stated.
He later commented that if the soil depths on the site proved to be less than that, the landfill “could always go up in the air,” changing the contour of the land. One square acre, six feet deep would take care of the solid waste disposal for a population of 6,000 for one year, Foreman stated.
ADMIRAL Gardner asked if there were any witnesses in favor of the landfill permit. There were none. As Greene and Mears led off with the opposition’s viewpoint, the legal arguments were raised and the meeting abruptly ended.
The use permit will be readvertised for another Board of Zoning Appeals hearing. □
