The Rappahannock County School Board has adopted and forwarded to the County Board of Supervisors its public school budget for 1977-78.
The proposed budget projects an increase of 8 percent above funds budgeted for the current year. Over 3 percent of the increase is devoted to costs related to the start of a delayed Kindergarten program.
The 1977-78 regular school budget will require $1,205,310 or $89,755.00 above the current budget. $36,250.00 of the increase will be needed to provide the instructional personnel, transportation, materials, books, supplies, and furniture necessary to begin Kindergarten for the first time.
An analysis of the budget shows the following major categorical increases above expenditures for the current year:
Administration - $5,425.00 increase - provides for a full time Superintendent; an Assistant Superintendent - General Supervisor with administrative costs provided through federal funds; census costs; and office operation.
Instruction - $19,067.00 increase - provides one additional teacher for Kindergarten and a salary scale for teachers with a beginning salary of $8,500 and reaching a maximum of $12,000 after 14 years.
Other Instructional Costs - $12, 398 increase - to provide instructional materials and supplies; two aides as regulations for Kindergarten require; increased cost of tuition for vocational and special education pupils in regional programs; and additional library books and materials.
Transportation - $32,550.00 increase - provides equivalent of 3 drivers for Kindergarten; gasoline for an additional 35 - 40,000 miles; 5% increase in salaries; additional tires, repair parts, etc. for extra miles driven; and replacement of one additional bus at cost of $13,000.
Operation of School Plants and Office - $5,365 increase - to provide for fuel and utility increases; sewage treatment and testing;
