It’s an unfortunate fact that even if there was a maurauding animal at the door each time a householder screamed “Wolf,” neighbors would quickly tire of the sound and ignore the appeal. Yet last week’s News carried considerable cause for concern. In the second paragraph of the front page leading story appeared these words: “Also of interest.is that only 2.3 per cent of last year’s seniors see themselves becoming farm helpers or dairy workers.”
“Of interest” is a very calm introduction to that chilling statistic tolling the death and dearth of farmers and farms. What a shocking revelation of the attitude held either by the young members of a farm community or implicit in the educational goals of our school system.
This county, this country, this world needs urgently to take a penetrating look at what survival costs, and stop copping out. Much, much more than 2.3 per cent should find very soon, long before they graduate, that there is no work more important than producing good food, a job (lets give it its due, a career) requiring as much intelligence as any other occupation and more courage and skills than most. Farming is both a profession and a trade, demanding both know-how and know-when. The challenge is an absorbing one, for thoughtful citizens not for sluggards and education should make this and the rewards very clear.
Also in that News the editorial entitled “Farms and Subdivisions” accurately compared the merits of farms and subdivisions from the perspective of the pocketbook (and found the subdivision idea— or fantasy—a threatening one). It furthermore mentioned the exceptional fertility of the area around Hamilton—only 40 miles from our county seat. I’d like to know how Rappahan
