It’s time again for Rappahannock’s community minded volunteers to step forward. The Rappahannock Athletic Association has put out a call for men, women and older teenagers who are interested in helping with a fall soccer program for kids from seven to 17.
It’s a great sport. At the professional level, it provides all the excitement of football and basketball rolled into one. But more important for county youngsters who’ve never even seen a soccer ball before, it’s a game they can begin playing practically the same day they’re introduced to it. Granted, a few skills will be missing during the first contests and there 11 be mass confusion on the field as kids forget rules but they can operate under a “learn by playing” philosophy that's next to impossible in football or baseball.
Soccer is a great leveler, at least with beginners. The hotshot older brother who shone in Little League often can’t outdo his younger sister as they start in soccer. There are no special skills required at the outset. Basically, kids need to know how to run.
