o’clock burning law will be in effect. This law states that no open burning can be done within 300 feet of woodlands (or any material capable of spreading a fire to woodlands) except between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight. The law applies to burning from March 1 through May 15. State Forest Wardens, the County Sheriff, and other officials do not have the authority to issue permits allowing burning which takes exception to the law.
March 1 to May 15 is normally the most fire-prone period due to the dead, dry fuel which has accumulated over the winter. Additionally, spring is often characterized by extended dry periods and gusty winds. Please note that the 4 o’clock law applies to all open burning, regardless of weather conditions, conditions.
