The slow cooker, a fourth energy saving device, simmers food at low, even temperature for long periods. Set on low, slow cookers use less electricity per hour than a 100 watt light bulb. Cooking with slow cookers for eight hours using 125 to 200 watts per hour cost four to six cents (based on the rate of 3.5 center per kilowatt hour).
Slow cookers can also save money by tenderizing cheaper cuts of meat. They are especially convenient for those who prefer to fix dinner early in the day. Here is a simple recipe - Chicken Marengo -
Ingredients:
1 3-pound frying chicken, cut up.
1 (1‘/j ounce) package spaghetti sauce mix Vi cup dry white wine. 2 fresh tomatoes, quartered
One-third pound fresh mushrooms.
Directions:- - Place chicken in bottom of slow cooker. Combine dry spaghetti sauce mix with wine; pour over chicken. Cover and cook on low six to seven hours. Turn control to high. Add tomatoes and mushrooms. Cover and cook on high for 30 to 40 minutes or until tomatoes are done. Makes four to five servings.
