Local point-to-point enthusiasts had better prepare themselves for an onslaught of visitors at the Old Dominion races this Saturday and again at the Rappahannock races May 19. Besides the usual crowds from the Washington metropolitan area, the hills should be dotted with New Yorkers.
The Sunday, March 5, edition of The New York Times carries a hymn of praise to the “ladies and gentlemen who spend half the year chasing foxes on horseback” and then “chase each other on horseback over the neatly pastured and fenced hillsides of this historic area,” in a sure sign of spring.
The reporter was kind enough to include the 1979 schedule of Virginia’s pointto-points along with a detailed map and printed directions on how to reach the hinterlands from the big city. Folks who rely on the map alone, however, are in for a shock if they expect to find Sperryville between Warrenton and Amissville. Maybe the travellers from The Big Apple will miss us after all.
