More than 170 firemen including volunteers from Rappahannock County attended the first annual fire school, sponsored by the Fauquier County Fire and Rescue Association, March 24-25 and March 31-April 1 at the Warrenton firehouse and the new field training area on Rt. 674 near Hurleytown.
Taking advantage of the training, which is coordinated with the Rappahannock County Fire School held annually in late September, were firemen from Prince William, Warren, Frederick, Culpeper, Orange as well as Rappahannock and Fauquier counties.
Working in four groups, the firemen received 30 hours of intensive training over the two weekend sessions. Six classes were given: Organization and Operations of Fire Companies; Chemistry of Fire; Protective Clothing and Breathing Apparatus; Small Tools and Forceable Entry; Flammable Liquids; and Fire Ground Safety and Tpctics.
Classroom instruction was conducted at the Warrenton firehouse before the practical exercises, most of which were conducted at the new countyowned training site on Rt. 674. The class on Forceable Entry was conducted at the site of the old Sycamore Hill
