In a related occurrence, the health department has revised the original septic permit issued to NPEA to allow only chemical toilets. ‘‘Under the conditions they have now. the subsurface drainfteld for flush toilets is inadequate.” said William Burke, sanitary superintendent from the health department's Culpeper office. He noted that the drainfield could accommodate effluent from approximately 100 people for toilets and handwashing only, not from 400 people for toilets, handwashing and showers.
The permit revisions made on Monday require that the flush toilets be closed and allow five chemical toilets, according to Burke. He noted that as many more chemical toilets as needed may be installed upon request.
Burke reported that several inspections of the property have already been made and that the inspections will continue at intervals during the ten-day period of the camp meeting.
Since campers and camping will not be allowed on the sue. there is no requirement under health department regulations that the water supply be approved. according to Burke. "In most counties, there are county requirements on this type of thing. But to my knowledge, there are none (in Rappahannock's ordinances)." he concluded.
