To the editor: On Thursday night (619-80) the Washington Volunteer Fire Department tested several pieces of fire equipment. In the process they discovered that two lengths of hose were not usable (they failed under water pressure). As a result of the test using a fire hydrant in the Town of Washington, the Town water became muddy. This always happens when a fire hydrant is opened in town.
Evidently someone complained about the muddy water to a Town official. It is my understanding that the Fire Department has since been told by this ‘‘official’’ not to use the Town water system in the future unless they absolutely have to do so.
It seems to me that this “official" is confused about the complaint lodged last week. The problem is the water system, not the Fire Department. Much discussion has been heard in years past about the deplorable state of the Town water system and the need for repair. It seems idiotic to me to deal with the problem by limiting the one resource we all have to save our homes in the event of fire when what we need is some action taken to update and repair the existing water system. I sincerely hope the members of the Fire Department do not listen to this “official”; that they continue to test their equipment so they will be prepared if there is a fire in town.
