A first commencement for Wakefield School’s Preparatory School honoring seven graduating seniors was held last Tuesday evening, June 17, in the Wakefield School auditorium at Huntly.
This graduation and closing exercise represented a high-water mark in Wakefield’s development since its founding just seven years ago. Since 1973, Wakefield has extended its plant, facilities and program to accommodate pre-school, kindergarten, primary, grammar and preparatory school levels.
The closing exercises for the Preparatory School began with a procession of graduating seniors and faculty in academic dress, and the invocation by the Rev. Maurice Du Castillon of Washington, Va.
The commencement address was delivered by the Honorable Raymond Guetf, Jr., member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 17th District. After presentation of the 1980 academic awards by Headmaster William E. Lynn, Jr. and the faculty, diplomas were conferred.
Wakefield School’s 1980 graduating seniors were Denis Dierig of Front Royal, a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist and editor of the student newspaper; Mary Noel Connors of Warrenton who presented Virtus Et Sapientia. the school’s first yearbook, to Mr. and Mrs. Lynn; Susan Jean Courtney of Washington, Va., Anne Carrington Hawkins of Benyville, William St. Clair Talley of Millwood, Tiffany Christel Clouser of Warrenton and Ivan Borello of Winchester.
An important part of the program was the presentation of awards. James Dawson, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Dawson III of Huntly. received the Dr. William E. Lynn, Sr. Memorial Award for Academic Exxcellence. a cash award presented to the one student each year who
