The dumpster sites are sometimes referred to as "Tysons Corner” or the "Scrabble Mall,” and some patrons go out of their way to leave items that are marginally usefill on the edge of the dumpster, although regulations prohibit it. Virgil said he sees the sense in it, having found some of his best items outside the container. Last Thursday he wanted to bring home a "perfectly good” double-bed mattress that was kind of grungy but basically sound.

"I don't have nowhere to keep it without the rats gettin’ to it,” he said. So the mattress stayed, at least for the time being.

The Huntly site is more regularly picked-over, drawing whole families from Chester Gap and Front Royal. Not too long ago I went to throw a plastic bag into the container in Huntly and barely stopped myself when a little head popped up from inside. That was the same week a woman in another state was crushed to death when she couldn't escape the compacter.

There have been fires at the dumpster sites, said the sheriff, but he attributed them to people dumping partially extinguished trash barrells in the containers, not vandalism. And there haven’t been any reported accidents yet, but some might say it’s only a matter of. time.

Myself, I’d be much more worried about the germs, but Virgil said he doesn’t give it a second thought. "I wear gloves,” he said.
