After trying limits on hikers on Old Rag Mountain in October, the Shenandoah National Park proposes to continue the practice of'issuing permits for the ridge trail on weekends and holidays from April through October in 1996.
Last year the permits were free. The park’s new proposal includes a charge of $3 to $5 for the permits.
The park will develop a management plan over the winter and schedule a public comment period for late winter or ear|y spring. Rep. Frank Wolf, R-lOth District, has already voiced his opposition to any plan that restricts access to Old Rag or charges for hiking permits.
Actually the park did not turn away any hikers during October. The capacity of 200 cars in the overflow parking lot was never reached. The park believes this was the result of a combination of rainy weather on some weekend days, less than spectacular fall color and advance publicity about the permit system and overcrowding on weekends.
