Mr. Massie asked if the county could require that audits be done by the same company that audits the county.
County Administrator John McCarthy said the county would automatically have an 'audit of its expenses for fire and rescue, but he did not know about audits of other fire and rescue funds.
Mr. Burke said not all companies have audits, but “our books are open.”
County Attorney Peter Luke said for the county to have the audits done, all the companies would have to keep their books in the same way.
Mr. Burke said each time a different treasurer is elected by a company the method of keeping books could change.
Piedmont District representative Charles K. “Pete” Estes said he did not believe the county could audit the fire and rescue squads, which are independent entities. Wakefield District representative Hubert S. Gilkey agreed.
Ron Frazier, the new representative from JacksOn District, asked if the county would have a policy on fire companies charging for the use of their buildings.
