Photo Ethics
\ j Our integrity depends upon our reputation for credibility in the community we serve. This credibility is based largely on social convention which traditionally accepts the scene within the four borders of a photograph as proof positive of the event. Photographs possess the unique power to be proof positive, and thereby to inform, influence and change, as well as to provide a clear historical record.
In order to protect photographic integrity and assure that the photograph shall remain an article of proof positive of events, the Rappahannock News adopts the following policy guidelines for the handling of editorial digital images in this newspaper as stated by the National Press Photographers Association:
“As journalists we believe the guiding principle of our profession is accuracy, therefore, we believe it is wrong to alter the content of a photograph in any way that deceives the public.
“As journalists we have the responsibility to document society and to preserve its images as a matter of historical record.
“It is clear that the emerging electronic technologies provide new challenges to the integrity of photographic images. This technology enables the manipulation of the content of an image in such a way that the change is virtually undetectable.
“We believe photojoumalistic guidelines for accuracy currently in use should be the criteria forjudging what may be done electronically to a photograph. Altering the content of a photograph, in any degree, is a breach of ethical standards recognized by the NPPA.”
