working closely with the faculty and doing more research, the cortimittee developed a policy that was unanimously endorsed by the faculty. This only intensified the eventual disappointment when the school system did not adopt the proposed policy or revise the approach to attendance at all.
In my personal view, we need not only a stricter policy but also a sustained program of explaining to the community how absences hold back the entire class. Students coming to school when they are sick is not what I’m talking about. That “solution” would be inhumane and would also spread disease and be counterproductive. It’s the marginal absences — to get prom clothes, absences for vacation trips, absences the morning after a ball game and absences for minor discomfort.
When a student is out of class it is pot just that one student who is affected; the whole class is affected. Our entire program of instruction is held back.
I believe that most parents will help us improve attendance when the effect absences have on academic standards is better explained. We need the administration to take the lead in preaching attendance. If you as a parent are at any school meeting where the administrator does not mention attendance, ask why it was not mentioned. We need a better policy, we need an emphasis on attendance and a renewed commitment to curriculum and academic achievement and to the administration working with the faculty.
