Under the SCC rulesr'tetepfione'numbers would be portable within certain geographic areas regardless of the chosen local exchange carrier, making it possible for consumers to change providers without having to change telephone numbers.
The SCC is still working out details of how a minimum level of service will be guaranteed, especially in rural areas where competitive alternatives may not exist..
In Rappahannock County |wo companies provide local telephone service but do not compete. Bell Atlantic serves much of the county including Sperryville, Woodville and Amissville. Sprint/Centel provides service in Washington and Flint Hill as well as Huntly and Chester Gap.
Many calls that were long distance within the county -are now or soon will be toll free. Customers with 675 exchanges in Washington and Flint Hill passed referendums to pay higher monthly rates in exchange for toll free calling first to Culpeper numbers and then to Front Royal numbers. This will made almost all of the county toll free from the county seat in Washington, but those with 67f elephone numbers are paying a hefty rate for) te service.
It is not clear if allowing competition in local telephone service will have any effect in Rappahannock County.
