The National Guard was called in to help county residents, arriving at 11 p.m. on Sunday. Sheriff Gary Settle and Col. Dieter Knuepfer, the county’s disaster coordinator, requested their assistance to help get to residents who had an emergency situation. Four National Guardsmen from Ft. Belvoir showed up with two HUM-Vs (high mobility multi-purpose vehicles), and were assigned to plenty of tasks through the SherifFs Office, including picking up SherifFs Office personnel so they could get to work.
Sheriff Settle said he does not know what they would have done without the help of the National Guard. “We would have been stopped,” he said.
Many calls from, citizens requesting assistance were handled by the SherifFs Office on Sunday. Jim Hitt of Castleton became stranded when his truck got stuck in snow on Route 640 in Amissville. Luckily Mr. Hitt was able to make it to a nearby residence until the Sheriff’s Office could help him get his truck out.
