This has been one whopper of a blizzard, the biggest snowstoim to hit Rappahannock since 1962 when up to 40 inches fell on the east coast under -'blizzard conditions.
Mother Nature dumped from two to three feet of snow on most of the county between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning. Maybelle Gilkey in Chester Gap estimated that they had at least 30 inches, possibly 36. Exact measurements were nearly impossible because of the high winds and drifting. The wind was so power. ful that it could leave some spots totally free of snow, next to a drift of monumental proportions.
Dennis Wingfield of Sperryville, Channel 4’s weather watcher, reported 30 inches of snow fell at his house. He measured the depth in 11 different spots in his yard. He said, “The winds changed the. amounts of snow in different locations. Some areas are protected from the winds. You have to use common sense and logic when you measure.”
