In reviewing the year’s most important local stories it became clear that several of them are inter-related. The high school expansion has been needed for some years but this past year a $3 million bond sale was authorized to fund the addition. The architectural plans are almost complete and construction will begin this year.
To fund the school budget, as well as the rest of the county’s expenses, the supervisors placed a meals tax referendum on the ballot, and it passed. Soon they will determine at what rate the tax will be set, and whether they need to impose a lodgings tax also.
While we’re on the subject of funding, the Board of Supervisors established the Sperryville Gateway Committee and allotted $10,000 for their project. The community supported the monthly meetings and spent the year working on the visioning process, the mission statement and goals. The committee conducted a mail survey to assess what the
