3.) I urge you to call together an executive panel of industry representatives on the status of private sector Y2K compliance. The panel, consisting of industry leaders should answer the question: where does the private sector stand with regard to Y2K compliance? The panel must then quickly report its findings to the American people. The public must be able to make intelligent decisions based on credible information. Perhaps the panel can make monthly reports on Y2K progress. Again, let me stress that in order to avoid panic and alarmist reactions to the impending Y2K phenomenon, we must address the issue. If Y2K conversion has a negative impact, the potential ripple effect will be great.
