At mid-morning on Dec. 12, I was in my study talking on the phone with Bayard Catron. We were discussing a program of readings I am to prepare for The Nature Group in Sperryville. Lee Trott suddenly appeared at the door: “Come quick!” she said. “There’s a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak on the bird feeder!”
“You mean an Evening Grosbeak,” I said. The boldly marked Evening Grosbeak is an erratic visitor to southeastern feeders, not too unusual but always cause for excitement when they appear.
“No,” said Lee. “A Rosebreasted Grosbeak. Come look!”
I thought to myself but did not say, that this bird is in Mexico or South America — certainly not here in Virginia on a cold, gray day in December. Still, Lee knows her birds and she is familiar with Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. There was an urgency to her summons that I took seriously. Serious enough to abruptly terminate my phone conversation.
