WASHINGTON: Rep. • Frank R. Wolf (R-VA) said Dec. 29 that he has called on President Clinton to step up efforts to prepare the nation for the upcoming Year 2000 (Y2K) computer conversion.
In a letter to the president, Wolf said, “There are 367 days remaining until the year 2000 and many Americans are wondering if your nation is ready. I am concerned that without a clear and calm message of reassurance from high-ranking federal officials, the public may begin to panic over the uncertainty surrounding this matter.
While I am encouraged by the recent creation of the President’s Council on Year 2000 Conversion and the $3.4 billion in Fiscal Year 1999 funding by Congress for Y2K conversion, as well as your announcement that the Social Security Administration’s Y2K problems have been solved, the federal government may have done too little too late. The American people need leadership and assurance. I respectfully call on you to take
