“We walked along stream beds, looking under bridges and in culverts,” Sherertz said. “I walked many power line rights-of-way in Rappahannock, Culpeper and Fauquier County. It is all just so sad.”

Because the discovery was made outside the Warrenton town limits, the case was turned over to the Sheriff's Office. Higgs noted that this was not the first time a body has been found in this remote area of the county.
On Nov. 1, 1997, the body of James Melvin Harris, 23, of Manassas was found by hunters in the woods off Putnam’s Mill Road, about a mile from where the body was found on Saturday. Two New York men were later arrested and convicted for the drugrelated slaying.
Bailey, believed to be the last person to see Pruitt before she disappeared, remains in the custody of the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.
He is being held without bond on a charge of unauthorized use of Pruitt’s vehicle, and as the result of Warrenton Police serving an outstanding warrant issued for his failure to appear in court in Prince William County on an unrelated charge. He has been questioned about his involvement in the disappearance of Pruitt.
The missing woman’s father declined comment Sunday, giving only a hint of what the family might be experiencing.
“We feel a certain amount of relief,” Hugh Pruitt said.
