It is not known for sure who designed the first flag. The red, white, and blue may have come from the flag of the British East India Company from the year 1704.
The flag has six white stripes, and seven red stripes. There is a legend that George Washington said, “We take the blue from heaven, the red from our Mother Country, separating it by white stripes showing we have separated from her. The white stripes shall go down to posterity representing liberty.”
