Although Sherertz did not like Bankston’s solution, he did not stop him, since “the game warden is responsible in incidents like this that involve wildlife,” said Sherertz.
“It was very difficult for Jim to make this decision,1 and I know he is deeply troubled,” added Sherertz. “Personally, I was distraught over the shooting ... I was sickened by it.” • .

Local citizens who have become aware of the shooting of the animals have reacted strongly, and according to Sherertz, several people have contacted the Sheriff’s Office and state wildlife management authorities, questioning the game warden’s actions.
“I understand that this incident has been brought up to the Governor’s cabinet level, and that the Secretary of Natural Resources has reviewed it,” said Sherertz. “I also understand that a new policy has been written, and that they are in the process of preparing a press release.”
As for the rationale for the shooting, Sherertz urged others to be understanding.
“Nothing like this has ever happened before in Bankston’s career,” he said. “He has an extremely dangerous job to do ... Jim is not a callous individual, but he must look at these situations (involving animals) as wildlife management issues, not' ‘warm and fuzzy’ issues.”
