early beginning in Homer’s Odyssey. When Odysseus left home to fight the Trojans, he left his household in the hands of Mentor. Mentor’s wise guidance of Odysseus’ son Iblemachus empowered Telemachus, when grown, to travel long and far in search of his father. When they reunited, they joined together in regaining Odysseus’ throne. Thus began the use of the word mentor, over time, to mean wise guide, trusted friend, advisor and teacher.
Well known examples of mentoring relationships are Socrates and Plato, Hydn and Beethoven, and Freud and Jung.
Many people may not realize that this relationship flows both ways. It is not a process which produces a clone, but one in which the mentor’s ideas are exposed to the scrutiny of another, the mentee, or partner, whose response may bring an entirely new perspective to the mentor’s thoughts. In addition, the experience of being influential in the life of another can greatly enrich the mentor’s life.
Mentors do not rescue, but partner, guiding the other in applying skills of his own to meet his goals. The mentor never assumes that he knows which way his partner should go, or the solutions to his problems, but puts his energy towards facilitating the other to find his own direction. In this
