If you are watching your salt intake, rinsing the sauerkraut can reduce the sodium significantly.
The garden was very important as it provided food for the family all year.
Sauerkraut Salad
1 small can chopped sauerkraut
1 can whole com (drained)
1 chopped green pepper
1 onion chopped
1 carrot grated
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
1/3 cup salad oil
1/4 cup water
Combine all vegetables. Mix other ingredients. Pour over vegetable mix and let stand overnight in refrigerator.
The Cal Ripkin Southeast Regional All Star Tbumament for age 12 and under was held last week in the Jim Barnett Park in Winchester.
Our grandson, David Keyser, was on the host Winchester team. We were there for the opening ceremony, and what enthusiasm was shown as each team went onto the diamond carrying their state flag, Alabama, Georgia, Fauquier, Virginia, Eastern North Carolina, Western North Caroline, South Carolina, Glen Allen, Tennessee and Florida.
When each team lost two games their flag was removed. You could tell who was in the game by looking at the remaining flags. Host Winchester came in fifth place, with Georgia winning the tournament. They will participate in the Babe Ruth series in Indianapolis.
The heavy rains of the weekend caused games to be canceled. On Monday morning helicopters were brought in to dry the field so the games could continue.
