One can certainly see some interesting things if we take the time to sit and watch. As I was doing just that one day last week I heard a persistent chirping, first in one spot, then another, in our yard.
To my amazement, upon following this chirping, I witnessed quite a show. I’ve done articles about the parasitic Brown-headed Cowbird but I Was not expecting to see the unbelievable sight in front of me.
After seeing the “immature” cowbird chirping away for food, I then saw its “host”. A Song Sparrow, half the size of the cowbird, was feverishly rushing here and there catching various insects to try to fill the cowbird. Since that time a week has past and the sparrow continues to feed the cowbird. Everywhere the unsuspecting Song Sparrow goes, the hungry cowbird follows.
