The state convention in Roanoke, Va. in June will choose delegates to attend the national convention.
Bland said the Democrats haven’t had a state wide primary since 1988 when it was held in March. The vote came in so late that the nomination of Massachusetts’s Gov. George Dukakis had already been decided.
The African American vote in Virginia is a major element. In 1988 civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, who was running, got 45 percent of the Democratic vote.
