The kids’ dad is a veteran of many halftime shows. He had lightheartedly predicted that the “halftime with Janet Jackson” would start after the halftime experts filled the stadium with smoke. Then Janet Jackson would come up somehow from the bowels of the earth to sing and dance to mad applause.
He was wrong, of course. What actually happened was that after the stadium was filled with smoke, Janet Jackson was transported down from on high, to sing and dance to mad applause.
(I didn’t see much of that. I was reviewing seventh-grade history at the time.)
After Jackson’s first number, a blond cowboy screamed into the microphone words that I am assuming were meant to be inspirational. I could tell they were supposed to be inspirational because he was wearing a United States flag over his tank top.
I was further inspired by two nearly naked women behind him who were waving flags.
