had lately, it’s not surprising that the Science Fair has been rescheduled for Feb. 11-13 at the Rappahannock County Elementary School.

The public is invited to come and see the projects on Thursday, Feb. 12 in the RCES gym. Students from 6th to 12th grade will compete, hoping to advance to the regional fair in Charlottesville and vie for cash and scholarships.

Here are some of the projects to look for from grades 6 and 7. For Gail O’Neal’s 6th grade class, good projects include “Can Electricity Separate a Compound?” by Austin Burnett; “Does Size Affect the Pressure Sensitivity of Concrete Blocks” by Joe Vickers; “The Effect of Worms on Decomposition” by Ashley Riggelson; “Millipedes with the Munchies” by Kendra Settle; and “Sunseekers: Which Legume will Maneuver the Maze the Quickest?” by Madison Herbert.

In Holly Massie’s 7th grade class, some projects to look for include “The Effect of Bat Weight on the Distance of Ball Flight” by Chase Tupper; “The Effect of High Protein Diets on the Regeneration Rates of Planaria” by Ella Miller; “The Effect of UV Filters on Sun-sensitive Yeast” by Addie Cupp; “The Effect of Added Weight on the Downhill Velocity of Dirtbikes” by Jeff Booker; and “The Study of Handmade Holograms” by Michael Landrum.

One thing is for sure— there will be a variety of projects at this year’s Science Fair so there should be something for everyone. The students have put much thought and planning into these projects. Come out and see the results.
