The Theatre at Little Washington joins with the Smithsonian Chamber Players on Saturday, Feb. 14 in presenting another program in “The Brilliance of the Baroque” concert series at 8 p.m.
On the program will be works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and the brothers Alessandro and Benedetto Marcello. Harpsichordist James Weaver and cellist Kenneth Slowik are the featured artists.
James Weaver founded the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society, establishing a comprehensive presentation of historically informed performances which has gained international prestige. As a performer, he divides his time among the harpsichord, fortepiano, and organ, appearing as solo artist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Europe.
His numerous recordings as performer and conductor include three "Record of the Year” awards.
Kenneth Slowik is artistic director of the Chamber Music Program at the National Museum of American History. He is a founding member of the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the Smithson and Axelrod string quartets, and the Castle Trio, and has been a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the National Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, and the Cleveland Orchestra.
He has made more than 50 recordings—many of them international prize winners.
The program for the concert is made up of two works by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Suite in C Minor for Violoncello Solo, BWV 1011, and the Concerto in D Minor after Alessandro Marcello, BWV 974, plus cello sonatas by Benedetto Marcello and Antonio Vivaldi, in which Catherine Slowik will assist her father as continuo cellist.
