I felt as if I’d been slapped in the face, like I’d just witnessed an over-produced rape on national television.
For 10 minutes, I was in shock about what the network brain trust considered entertainment. I ranted on to my confused family (they hadn’t seen it), “degrading,” “cheap,” “asinine.” I tried out “insensitive” and “stupid” but they seemed inadequate.
I lamented about what television has sunk to — imbecilic talk shows, reality TV, “American Idol” and now this. I wondered if the American public is really so base, or if the television gurus just think we are.
And I felt badly for the members of the two Super Bowl teams. Do we think so little of their “entertainment value” that we need to accessorize the game with all this glitzy nonsense?
