laylor said that alter a church member was charged with six counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor, Hitt and Atkins spread the story he had barred the man from church. Taylor said he had to get a letter from Commonwealth Attorney Peter Luke to establish the church had nothing to do with the judge’s order.
Hitt and Atkins flatly deny any spreading of rumors in the court case.
Amissville Baptist Church was formed in 1888 and sits in a simple white building that is even older. Taylor, 45, has been a minister at the church for two years. Prior to becoming a minister he was in business in North Carolina and served as a correctional officer and a police officer.
Several people have left the church over the incident and others are deeply hurt by it. One member who grew up at the church said “it was the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
Atkins said he thought the problem arose because Taylor is a “control person, he wants to control everything.”
Mills said the church just wants to move on from the incident.
