nger is all around us. Each night on television,
Americans watch angry Iraqis, some driven to JL Skilling, so filled with rage that they stripped and dismembered the corpses of a group of American security men and hung them from a bridge. In Madrid it was deep world-shaking anger that blew up a commuter train killing innocent Spaniards on the way to work. Terrorism is an outgrowth of unquenchable international rage. Anger stalks Israel and the Palestine Authority and wells up in the hearts of men in Afghanistan. It breeds on old disputes and new outAs
we watch television from our homes in Rappahannock County on a spring evening, it is hard to conceive of such rage or the need for it. Rappahannock is a peaceful county; the little villages like Amissville, Sperryville and the Tbwn of Washington as •warm and inviting as any place on earth.
It is hard then to understand the anger that seems to be flaring in the Amissville Baptist Church. The church, nearly 140 years old, stands in quiet white dignity off Route 211. It is the place of worship of 240 isouls; a place where children are baptized and the elderly laid to rest. Many of our neighbors have worshipped there since they were children and like many eimple American churches it is a symbol of peace and love in our community. ; Earlier this year, by a vote of 25 to 22, the church effectively banished one of its members, Amy Hitt, a ;39-year-old mother of three children who had been an active member of the church. The pastor, N. Edward ^Taylor, II and six deacons signed a letter criticizing her behavior and effectively forced her from the church. Taylor and others claim she has hurt people for five years by outspoken “gossip.”
This in turn drove church members to take sides, aome for Hitt and some for Taylor and the church deacons. Taylor and Wes Mills, a deacon and chairman of the School Board, said it was a painful decision to exclude her, taken only after years of trying to get Hitt to change. rages.
