Last summer thanks to the efforts of a group of stalwart community fireworks fans, the fields at the Thornton Hill Hounds racecourse were covered with tents, parked cars and most spectacularly with colorful, spread blankets stacked with happy folks. They had come by the hundreds to picnic, party and look to the skies for those ever familiar bursts of pyrotechnic wonderment. And they weren’t disappointed. The view was perfect and so were the fireworks.
Bringing hack the fireworks to Rappahannock County in a big way was the vision of local organizers Richie Burke, Gary Settle, Mike Leake, A1 Henry, Greg Williams and Eddie Wayland. This year, Larry Grove, has been added to the core group of coordinators who are planning the event again. “The fireworks have already been ordered,” said Burke who noted that the venue will be much the same as last year’s with vendors, food and entertainment. Local organizations and businesses are encouraged to participate. All proceeds from this event will go to the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department, however, Burke said that non-profit groups would be able to keep whatever funds they raised.
With gas prices soaring and no apparent end in sight, Burke is optimistic that this year’s event may draw even more people from neighboring counties who could come to Rappahannock, spend a pleasant and fun day and see a spectacular fireworks display that would rival those of Northern Virginia. '
