Two local riders bested the competition at last week’s Warrenton Fbny Show, earning the coveted “Best Child Rider7 titles and championship ribbons in their respective divisions.
Warrenton’s Devon Walther and Middleburg’s McKenzie Canard won the top prizes at the 89th annual Warrenton Pony Show held July 2-6 at the historic Warrenton Horse Show grounds on Shirley Avenue.
The A-rated competition benefits the local SPCA; last year’s show raised more than $5,000 for the Warrenton shelter.
Canard secured the Best Child Rider on a pony award with Kathryn Southard’s Feathers McOraw, while Walther won the Best Child Rider on a horse prize with her grand champion junior hunter River Mist.
“The show went really, really well this year,” said copresident Lauren Hair, 17, serving her first year as copresident of the junior committee. “We had lots of entries. And other than a shower on Friday, the weather was gorgeous.”
Hair said that the junior committee had few problems to deal with through the week. “It is a huge responsibility to (manage) such a big competition, but the committee did a great job. We had to motivate the jump crew a little bit, but other than that, the show ran smoothly.”
Co-president Kristina Stone was out of the country for the duration of the show, on an academic trip, but Hair said that other committee members pitched in to make the competition a success. Hair’s grandmother, longtime pony show adult supervisor Wilma Hoovler. “knows this show backwards and forwards. It’s a huge help to have her input.”
Other big winners of the week included grand champion amateur owner hunter Pam Deslauriers on Bruce, grand champion children’s horse Protocol with Kelsie Jeffries, grand champion children’s pony hunter Whispering Hill with Catherine Pietro, grand champion local hunter Cedar Spring McDreamy with Maggie Pollard — also high p!6int local pony winner.

Plans are already underway for next summer’s 90th Warrenton Pony Show. The entire week-long event is run strictly by junior committee members, who handle all organizational tasks year-round.
