Mint Slewlep wins Da Hoss
at Colonial Downs Saturday Marshall Dowell’s Mint Slewlep closed stubbornly to wear down 8-5 favorite Salinja for a sharp win in the $60,000 Da Hoss Stakes Saturday at Colonial Downs. Mint Slewlep finished in 1:37.00 to win by three-quarters of a length over Saliiya. The Da Hoss was the 4-yearold Slew City Slew colt's first stakes victory. Trainer Robbie Bailes deferred credit for the win. “I have to thank Marshall and his wife Carol because they picked this spot. I didn't pick it." he said. Dowell, a popular local owner from nearby Mechanicsville. Virginia, was equally humble after the $16.60 upset. “Well, it just goes to show you a blind squirrel gets an acorn every once and a while." he concluded Privately Approved closed determinedly under Luis Garcia to score a neck victory over Kosmo's Buddy in a $28,000 allowance to cap a three-win Sunday for Garcia. Privately Approved rebounded from a distant fifth in the Buckland Stakes here 15 days ago with a perfect stalking trip behind Kosmo's Buddy and Tiger Fever. Sunday's win was Privately Approved's eighth from 41 lifetime starts. Peter Bazeos trains Privately Approved for owner Panagiotm Tsipantis. Garcia also won with Champagne Disco in the fifth and Jealously the third. Garcia, the leading rider here in 2006, moved into a clear second with the Sunday triple pushing his 2008 total to 21.
