The cost to all inmates participating in the work-release program is $14 a day, according to deputy Brown. If an inmate receives the GPS unit, he or she pays $10 more a day. The leasing company receives $8.95 the amount, and $1.06 comes back to the county's work release program, said Brown.
A former sheriff John Henry Woodward, said he began a work release program during his term (1984 - 1995) but it was discontinued sometime after his term ended.
“Past Sheriff Larry Sherertz would not allow a work release program due to a lack of manpower;’' Smith said.
