Cloniger’s appeal denied
Convict'd murderer Ira Wayne Cloniger, 46, has lost his final appeal.
The case is finally "at an end," Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke said this week, referring to the Virginia Supreme Court’s decision Sept. 23 to deny the Cloniger defense’s petition for a rehearing of his 2006 first-degree murder conviction and subsequent life sentence.
Luke prosecuted Cloniger, who was found guilty of the July 2006 stabbing death of his friend, Edward Carlton Eletcher Jr , m Gid Brown Hollow in a trial that revealed dark tales of violence and betrayal. Cloniger was arrested in a field near Massie’s Comer July 9, 2006 after a week-long manhunt.
