Small paintings perfect
for holiday gift giving

The Middle Street Gallery, a 20-person artists' cooperative based in Rappahannock County, will show original paintings, photographs and sculpture by its members from Nov. 6 through 29.
This exhibition, one of several group shows put on each year at the gallery, comes with a special twist appropriate for the season (not to mention the state of the economy ). Called A Square Deal, the show will feature works of art that are all approximately 12 inches by 12 inches in si2e. In keeping with the diminutive size, the works' will be priced attractively for holiday purchase and will be available for immediate removal by the buyer.
Member artists Janet Brome and Pam Pittinger are collaborating on brilliantly colored bug sculptures, with paper-mache bodies, coated wire legs and wings made of painted window screen. They plan to make “a bunch of bugs, all fitting into a 12-inch cube,” Brome says.
Painter Thomas Spande will offer a brightly colored oil depicting a short stretch of the Hazel River. “Frequent walks along the Hazel River in the Shenandoah National Park yielded inspiration for this piece, which depicts dappled light falling on the river which meanders through nicks and boulders," he says. “In this picture I try to activate the picture plane with both illusionist ele
