College Students To Present Plav Week-End ‘ "The Crucible." a historical dra ma by Arthur Miller, will be pre sented by the Hampden-Sydney Jongleurs and the Longwood Players Thursday. Friday and Sat urday, March 28. 29. and 30 at Jarman auditorium in Farmville. The play first appeared in New York City January 2. 1953. Miller also wrote "The Death of a Sales man." "The Crucible" is a portray al of events in early New England when the infamous witch trials were being held. The year is 1692. and the season spring. The witch trials are in full swing at Saiern. Massachusetts. A group of town girls are in a neigh boring wood, dancing around a kettle while wild incantations issue forth in Barbadoes from the mouth of a Negro slave. Inside the courtroom Deputy Gov ernor Danforth is hearing testimony in behalf of several wives of promi nent townsmen to decide their fate as witches. These men are in court to obtain mercy for their wives from the Deputy Governor. A local farmer has ridden into town to render aid to those accused of witchc aft. The local pastor and consulting minister are in the court room to clarify matters as one of the local girls has broken under pressure and confessed, calling on heaven for mercy. The courtroom scene continues in Miller's dramatic message on per sonal freedom.
