Teen*Age Lunches
_ * Soup generally is not a satisfactory and adequate main dish for school lunches of teen-agers, Mary Clayton and - Dorothy Ullman of the Maine Experiment Station noted in the'course of of recent studies of noon lunches of 4&0 junior high students. The food requirements of both boys and girls at this age are very high— higher than those of their parents or younger brothers and sisters. To be properly fed children of this age need three square meals a day and hearty main dishes. . * . The Jyitritionists .observed that ' when soup. or chowder., was the main luncheon dish, both boys and girls were hungry by midafternoon. Soup has too much liquid in proportion to food to "stick to the ribs”. So they were •apt to satisfy their need for calories by filling up on candy or other sweets in the afternoon. Then the often lacked appetite for a square meal at night.
To provide the calories children of this age need, larger servings of lunch dishes and more hearty, concentrated foods are advised for the school lunch. The need for more calories than many of the lunches offered was shown by the fact that children bought more ice cream, cookies, candy and potato chips at the school where second helpings were not served than at the school which offered seconds.
The school lunch should be as nutritious as possible and offer more than a third of the daily food needs because many children do not eart breakfast—or have a Very skimpy breakfast, and many have inadequate evening meals, the nutritionists report. In homes where dinner is served ■ at noon while children are at school, chil_dren are sure to be short-changed on food unless the school lunch is liberal and emphasizes nutritients likely to be lacking in home meals.
The most striking lack in both home and school meals of these Maine children was vitamin C. ■Girls and boys both were short' in calories, irolf and niacin, boys also in thiamine. Hom^ meals were likely to be short also in vitamin A.
